The Chinese Shar-Pei is one of the most ancient and visually striking dog breeds in the world — a medium-sized Chinese guardian breed whose history in southern China stretches back over 2,000 years, with depictions of Shar-Pei-type dogs found in Chinese artifacts dating to the Han Dynasty (206 BC–220 AD). The breed's name translates from Cantonese as "sand skin" — a reference to its most extraordinary physical feature: a rough, bristly coat with a texture unlike any other breed, described as feeling like sandpaper or coarse burlap. The Shar-Pei comes in three coat types — horse coat (extremely short and prickly), brush coat (slightly longer), and bear coat (a longer, softer coat considered a fault by breed standards) — and in a wide range of solid colors. The breed's other defining characteristics are its deep, abundant wrinkles — most pronounced in puppies and concentrated around the head, neck, and shoulders in adults — and its blue-black tongue and gums, a trait shared with only one other breed, the Chow Chow. The Shar-Pei was used in ancient China as a farm dog, hunter, herder, and guardian, and later as a fighting dog. By the early 1970s the breed had nearly disappeared entirely due to the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, and was listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's rarest dog breed in 1978. American breeder Matgo Law launched an international appeal to save the breed, and the Shar-Pei was recognized by the AKC in 1992.
